Workshop Report: Grant Writing Training Held by BNITM for eWHORM and INTEGRATE Partners

On 1–2 September 2025, eWHORM and its sister project INTEGRATE jointly organized, through their common partner BNITM, a two-day online workshop titled “Grant Writing Skills to Enhance Participants' Ability to Write Winning Grant Proposals.” The training was delivered online in English and French and represents the second workshop in a three-part series facilitated by Dr Sylvie Kwedi and Leonard Nunford.

The workshop brought together early- to mid-career researchers and postdoctoral fellows from across the eWHORM consortium, including clinical trial sites working on onchocerciasis (INRB), loiasis (CERMEL) and mansonellosis (UB), as well as partners from the INTEGRATE consortium (ISTH and OWO – Lassa Fever). As with the previous session, participation was dynamic and interactive, and feedback reflected strong appreciation for the practical and hands-on approach.

The workshop aimed to guide participants through the full grant writing process and help them build a solid understanding of the essential elements required for a successful research proposal. Using a step-by-step approach, the trainers supported participants in developing research ideas into competitive proposals suitable for a range of funding opportunities.

Key objectives included:

  • Strengthening researchers’ capacity to develop high-quality project proposals
  • Providing an overview of the proposal and grant writing process
  • Discussing methods to develop research ideas and action plans for grant writing
  • Mastering the key components and structure of a grant proposal
  • Sharing practical tips for African researchers seeking grant funding
  • Understanding the proposal review process and preparing for evaluation

This workshop series contributes to ongoing efforts to build strong research and funding acquisition capacities within eWHORM, INTEGRATE, and partner institutions, supporting a sustainable future of healthcare preparedness in Sub-Saharan Africa.
