Workshop Report: Scientific Writing Training Held by BNITM for eWHORM and INTEGRATE Partners
On 7–8 July 2025, eWHORM and its sister project INTEGRATE jointly organized, through their common partner BNITM, a two-day online workshop titled “Improve Scientific Writing for Successful Publication in Peer-Reviewed Journals.” The training was delivered in English and French and represents the first in a series of three workshops on scientific communication, grant writing, and leadership, led by Dr Sylvie Kwedi and Leonard Nunford.
The workshop targeted early- to mid-career researchers and postdoctoral fellows. Participants joined from across the eWHORM consortium, including clinical trial sites working on onchocerciasis (INRB), loiasis (CERMEL) and mansonellosis (UB), as well as from the INTEGRATE consortium (ISTH and OWO – Lassa Fever). The sessions were highly interactive, and participant feedback indicated strong appreciation for the training.
The workshop aimed to strengthen essential scientific writing skills needed for successful publication in peer-reviewed journals.
Key objectives included:
• Understanding the structure and purpose of a scientific article
• Developing a logical flow and clear scientific arguments
• Writing with clarity, precision, and appropriate academic tone
• Applying best practices in referencing, ethical writing, and responding to reviewers
• Drafting or revising a manuscript
• Producing an abstract based on previous research
This workshop forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen scientific capacity within eWHORM, INTEGRATE, and partner institutions, supporting a sustainable future of healthcare preparedness in Sub-Saharan Africa.
